This season, many Kelowna seniors who are alone at home or living in care facilities will receive some holiday cheer thanks to the 11th Annual Be a Santa to a Senior® program. Sponsored by the local Home Instead Senior Care® office, the program brings together area nonprofits, retailers, volunteers and members of the community to provide gifts for lonely and isolated seniors.

“Many of our community’s seniors do not have the chance to celebrate the holidays surrounded by loved ones, and it breaks our heart to know they will be alone without gifts,” says Don Henke, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Kelowna and Penticton. “What is supposed to be happy time of year is often quite difficult for many seniors. Our Santa initiative brings holiday cheer to those who need it most.”

Kelowna’s Be a Santa to a Senior Program is sponsored by these generous partners:
  • Meals on Wheels, Kelowna and Penticton
  • Senior’s Outreach
  • Baptist Housing
  • Good Samaritan Society
  • Interior Health Long Term Care homes
  • Kelowna Mental Health

Participating retail locations will display Be a Santa to a Senior Christmas trees from November 13 to December 14 that feature ornaments with seniors’ first names and their gift requests. Holiday shoppers can pick ornaments from the trees, buy the items listed and return them in a gift bag (and with the ornament attached) to the store.

Be a Santa to a Senior trees will be set up at the following locations:
  • London Drugs Kelowna
  • London Drugs West Kelowna
  • London Drugs Penticton
  • Shoppers Home HealthCare, Kelowna

Program partners and volunteers will distribute the gifts to local seniors who might otherwise spend the holiday alone.
