  3. 4 Holiday Tips for Caregivers

The stress doesn't allow some people to enjoy the holidays

Suggestions for Easing Seasonal Stress

It’s the time of year when the lights go up, and the music starts playing. Amidst all the feasting and festivity, the holidays bring added stress of people hustling and bustling between family gatherings and shopping for the perfect gift. The festivities may cause caregivers of seniors some anxiety and concern. With all you do, adding more responsibilities and duties can leave you feeling more like the Grinch than jolly ole St. Nick!

You can beat the holiday blues when you step back, assess the situation, and take a few proactive steps. The caregivers at Home Instead Senior Care in Etobicoke understand the stress you face while you do your best for your family. We can help Mom age in the comfort of her home by providing personalized senior care services such as light household duties and cooking nutritious meals. Let us help you make the most of the holiday season.

We want to thank our community for their generosity as they donated hundreds of gifts and we also would like to thank our caregivers and volunteers who wrapped those gifts. Read more here

We wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season!

The Holidays can be Stress-Free and Fun

Embrace this joyful time of year and enjoy all it has to offer. Try following some of these suggestions:

  1. Try to focus on what is most meaningful. Ask yourself what would make this time of year a success. Is it cooking roast instead of turkey because your aging Dad loves it? Do you have time to bake your famous cookies this year? Do you need to have every single decoration put out or can you choose a few? Consider simplifying the tasks you take on and perhaps, start new traditions that can involve your seniors and kids alike, but are easy to organize.
  2. Assess past holiday traditions and decide what can go. This time of year can be exceptionally demanding if you are expected to host the big family meal on Christmas day. Yet, there are no hard and fast rules stating you have to host or cook the meal. Think about all the traditions you have kept over the years and decide to keep only those that bring the most joy to everyone in your home.
  3. Ask for or hire help. You may love your annual shopping trip with your sisters as it allows you an opportunity to get away and take your mind off routine tasks. There is no need to put it off because of caregiving duties; you can ask for professional help. See if your brother or cousin will sit with Dad for a few hours while you get away. If there is no family around to help, consider hiring respite care help through Home Instead Senior Care.
  4. Put yourself on Santa’s list! What we mean by that is, take care of yourself. This can be through a weekly afternoon off to run errands alone, or it can mean taking a brisk daily walk. Be sure you are getting plenty of sleep, drinking lots of fluids, and keeping up on exercise. It will help you stay in the best shape for all the duties before you and lessen caregiver burnout.
