After a rewarding 10-year career teaching in both Junior and Elementary schools, an opportunity presented itself in the form of an unexpected turn of events. A story in The Guardian showcased me assisting seniors in my community with tasks they were finding challenging. This prompted a phone call from the local Home Instead franchise owner inquiring about my interest in taking it over.
Fast forward six months and I was learning and educating seniors and their families about Home Instead and how caregivers could assist individuals and support aging in place.
Within a few months I realized how much seniors truly have to offer. I listened to their stories, their concerns and their hopes. It struck me how unique each senior is and how much we can learn from their experience and knowledge. I firmly believe that it is critical that our clients have a say in how they are cared for. The role our CAREGiver's play is crucial in making this a reality. Our CAREGivers are people who have varied experiences and backgrounds and time and time again, they step up and go above and beyond to support our clients and their families.
I will always remember our first client. She was 92 years old and was isolated after her husband had died. She didn't drive and she was craving conversation. One day she asked me about what I did before Home Instead and why I changed jobs. To this I explained, when the Home Instead opportunity presented itself, I realized I needed a change. I was looking for something different to feed my soul and although nine and ten year old's were fantastic to learn from and to teach because of their independent nature and willingness to learn, I needed a change that would reinvigorate me and have a purpose. Her response so aptly put was "Well us 90 year olds are pretty terrific too and we are no different from those nine and ten year olds. We try to be independent but sometimes we need help and we still love to learn. We are all just people, and you are a people person." It was at this moment I knew I had truly made the right decision in dedicating my career to assisting seniors. My commitment to myself and community is unwavering in that I am and will continue to always try to be there for those who need help.
