So what is non-medical home care exactly? Well, simply put non-medical home care is care that doesn't involve such things are checking blood pressure, wound care or diabetic foot care. Non-medical care is everything else and this is at the core of what Home Instead's CAREGiver's provide. Whether needing assistance with laundry, preparing meals, transportation to a medical appointment or just a friendly conversation, our professional CAREGiver's do it all.

Other examples include:

Companionship and Home Helper
(light housekeeping, medication reminders, grocery shopping)

Personal Care
(bathing, dressing, incontinence care, mobility assistance)

Alzheimer's and other Dementia care
(managing challenging behaviour, safety and security, encouraging engagement)

Transitional Care Services
(prescription pick up, transportation, hospital discharge assistance)

Hospice Support
(emotional support, respite for family caregivers)

We believe that anyone who needs a little help to stay living independently in their own homes can benefit from our home care services. People recently discharged from hospital might require temporary assistance with cooking, laundry and transportation. Adults with dementia might benefit from ongoing help with medication reminders. In general, if concern turns to worry and stress over not being able to live safely at home for yourself, spouse or loved one, you could benefit from the care we provide.

If you are unsure of the signs that it might be time, here are a few examples:

  • housekeeping isn't kept up like it used to be
  • household bills aren't being paid
  • medications aren't being taken on schedule
  • personal hygiene is declining
  • appliances are left on or forgotten
  • recently lost spouse
  • grieving the loss of independence
  • a diagnosis of Alzheimer's or other type of dementia
  • arthritis has made it difficult to do simple tasks like buttoning a shirt
It's no secret that home care can increase the quality of life at home. Our trained CAREGiver's not only provide practical assistance with mobility or hygiene, they also provide companionship. A 2014 report from the National Seniors' Council states that "the lack of a supportive social network is linked to a 60% increase in the risk of dementia and cognitive decline" (Fratilioni, L., H.X., Ericsson,K., Maytan, M. & Windblad, B. 2000). The report goes on to say that "socially isolated seniors are more at risk of negative health behaviours including drinking, smoking, being sedentary and not eating well; have a higher likelihood of falls; and, have a four to five times greater risk of hospitalization" (Nicholson, N.R. 2012).

So why Home Instead Senior Care of Prince Edward Island? Well, the percentage of seniors in residential care who have been diagnosed with depression or showed symptoms of depression without diagnosis is 44% and approximately 50% of people over the age of 80 reported feeling lonely (mental health commission). And although you probably can't always be there to personally be there for every member of your family, we can. Our CAREGiver's can act as your partner to ensure the highest quality of life at home.
