Risks Associated with Senior Depression

  1. Home

Depression and dementia are common in seniors and often go hand-in-hand.

  • A recent study has determined that depressive symptoms in midlife or in late life are associated with an increased risk of developing dementia. A report in the May issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, a JAMA Network publication, says it previously had been unclear whether depression was a direct risk factor for dementia.
  • When you look at the demographics, that’s not good news. About 5.4 million North Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, with the incidence expected to skyrocket. “Prevalence and costs of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are projected to rise dramatically during the next 40 years unless a prevention or a cure can be found,” the study authors note.

A Home Instead CAREGiver is a great antidote for both; depression and dementia. CAREGivers can help provide the companionship that improves the outlook each day for seniors living in the Mississauga ON area. What’s more, our CAREGivers are trained in the Alzheimer’s or Other Dementias CARE: Changing Aging through Research and Education Training Program. That’s a double dose of good news you’ll want to share.
