Take some time off to recharge while a caregiver take care of your senior loved one

Try Respite Care Services

We all deal with stress at different points in our lives. However, when you take care of an elderly loved one, you may be more susceptible to burnout and exhaustion than you realize. The emotional strain of tending to a senior with Alzheimer’s or who is on hospice care, threatens to deplete your health on emotional, mental, and physical levels. If you are part of the Sandwich Generation, those caring for their own family in addition to a parent, you may feel you can never catch a break.

Recharge before it is too late; take advantage of respite care from Home Instead Senior Care. Our compassionate caregivers are ready to lend a helping hand so that you can take an afternoon off for errands or lunch with friends. We understand the pressure you are under and can alleviate worry while taking a break.

Signs It Might Be Time for Respite Care

No one has an “S” emblazoned on their chest; although you might sometimes feel like you just flew around the city! You cannot do everything and should not allow guilt to overwhelm you. Instead, look for these signs that you are headed to caregiver burnout and then schedule respite care ASAP:

  • You withdraw from loved ones and friends. You will probably feel alone a lot. If you find that you are deliberately pulling away from family and friends, then burnout is on the horizon.
  • You lose your temper easily. Some of us have a short fuse in general; however, if you notice that you are irritated over the smallest slight, it is apparent you need a time-out.
  • You are more emotional than usual. As your parent’s health declines, you may grieve or feel despair. Without intervention, you may become depressed, which is a real risk for all caregivers.
  • You are always tired and cannot get much sleep. Your sleep patterns can be affected during the course of caring for your loved one.
  • You have more colds or get sick more frequently. The strain of day-to-day will wreak havoc on your immune system unless you take time out for yourself.
  • You gained (or lost) weight. When you neglect your health, your eating patterns are one of the first items to go awry. It is vital to maintain your nutrition to perform your duties.
  • You lose the motivation to accomplish things, including your dreams. When you are always “on,” it is hard to stay motivated to read or perform other mental tasks.

You do not have to travel down the caregiver path alone. Take advantage of regularly scheduled respite care to recharge. Your family will thank you. At Home Instead Edmonton, we offer tailored in-home senior care that leaves you confident that your aging loved one is safe and secure.
