This month, our office team is busy on many fronts! Here are just a few insights:

  • As noted in last week's blog post, we're "In the Spirit of Giving"; we hope you are getting in the spirit, too!
  • See our recent posts on Twitter on various senior care topics and issues, local senior care news, plus our own activities and celebrations, including our Caregiver of the Month for November. Follow us!
  • We are so proud of our team of 100+ caregivers; they are busy every month (!) providing quality in-home care to local seniors. Here is just one of our recent client testimonials:

My mother has lived alone for the last 20 years and had, for the majority of those years, been very active, social and able to take care of her affairs.  In the last 4 years, Mom's memory started failing and she began to show the signs of early dementia.  Because of this, she needed to have in-home companionship to help her with her daily affairs and then eventually she needed to move out of her home and into assisted living.   We have engaged Home Instead both to work with Mom in her home originally and now to provide a companion that Mom can rely on to take her on short outings, help her with getting to and from activities / appointments and, more importantly, be a friend in her assisted living facility.  We have found that person in Abby; she is a very loving, kind and fun person.  She and Mom have truly bonded, and she is accepting of Mom as she is. Mom's face lights up when Abby comes to visit her and Mom remembers Abby's name every time I talk to her, they have fun and laugh together, and Mom loves her time with Abby. The staff in Mom's facility have echoed our own observations, saying that Abby has been a joy to work with.

Abby is easy to work with and she follows family / facility instructions well, such as limiting sweets for Mom, and encouraging Mom to eat healthy snacks. She takes Mom to activities and has been very flexible in helping with doctor's appointments.  Abby has sent us pictures of Mom, which is great and much appreciated.  She is really a great companion for Mom and the evidence of their bond is clear from how Mom talks about Abby and the smile on her face when Abby comes to visit.  We really appreciate that we have found someone like Abby to be a part of Mom's life.  It means a lot when we are far away and can only phone / Skype with Mom to communicate in between in-person visits.

  • We love to be connected with seniors' facilities and organizations across Edmonton. For instance, in November and December we held Alzheimer's Family Caregiver Training Workshops at the Westend Seniors Activity Centre and the Mill Woods Seniors Activity Centre. In the New Year, watch our Calendar of Events for more locations and topics, including Caregiver Stress, Housing Options for Seniors, Aging in Place & Preventing Hospitalization, Alzheimer's Family Caregiver Training, and more.
