Tips to Make the Next Year Even Better for Your Senior and You

Tips and Encouragement from Senior Homecare Experts

Are you the primary caregiver for your aging parent? Do you find yourself always trying to strike a balance between caring for your spouse and children while also meeting the needs of your mom or dad? Many Canadians are finding themselves in the same struggle. According to the Canadian Women’s Health Network, “women tend to do up to 80 percent of the unpaid caregiving.” Often the burden of caring for seniors results in a lack of care for the caregiver themselves.

This year, resolve to get help from the home healthcare professionals at Home Instead Senior Care. Make time to do the things you need and want to do. Spend more quality time with your senior rather than just fulfilling your caregiving responsibilities. We step in to support caregivers, their families and loved ones with a variety of services on a regular or as-needed basis.

Tips to Make the Next Year Even Better for Your Senior and You

Caregiver stress occurs because of the emotional and physical strain of caregiving. It would help if you took your health and emotional needs seriously. When you do this, your responsibilities will not overwhelm you as often. Your relationships will benefit, and you will be happier overall. Use these suggestions and tips to make changes this year:

  • Schedule appointments with your health care provider: Just like a car cannot run forever without regular maintenance, start the New Year with an assessment of where you are healthwise. Make appointments to see your general practitioner and dentist. Let them know you are a caregiver. They may have some additional resources to help you.
  • Take care of your health: With your doctor’s blessing, resolve to get regular physical exercise, eat better, and get plenty of sleep. Your body will thank you; so will your family.
  • Get organized: If you have never been one to write down your to-do list or make a schedule, now is a great time to start. Your time is very precious, so ensure as much as possible can get done by creating a workable plan and sticking to it. Putting Mom or Dad on a written agenda can help when others join in to assist, like a home care expert.
  • Enlist support: You do not have to be the only one handling the day-to-day care of your senior. Ask for help from family. Discuss what each one of you can and cannot do and play to each other’s strengths. Don’t discount outside help from an in-home caregiver. Many offer 24-hour, respite, and other services to meet the needs of your senior and you.
