I have always been very close to my 3 grandparents.  I loved listening to their stories and learning how life used to be.  But it was their hands that always amazed me.  They were strong and fast and skilled.

When an opportunity took me across the country to B.C. and seeing my family regularly was no longer an option, I looked into volunteer work with the Interior Health Authority’s seniors program.  If I couldn’t see my own grandparents smile than maybe I could bring a smile to someone else’s grandparent.  It was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had and one that left a deep impression on me.

I continued to be involved with senior’s programs in various cities around North America.  That experience prompted me to return to school to complete a program in Health Services Administration, through Dalhousie University.

With this additional education, coupled with our personal and professional experiences, my husband Jonathan and I decided the time had come to bring Home Instead Senior Care to my home town.  I grew up in Niagara Falls.  This is where my family lives.  This is where my heart is and where it’s always been.

Caring for a loved one is not an easy task, no matter your age.  We often assume that this type of responsibility is something that we will encounter later in life, not as a teenager.

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 41.  At the age of 49, she lost her battle.  During those years, particularly the last 2 years, it was just my mom and I.  I was 16 years old, doing the groceries, taking mom to treatments, looking after the house and going to school.  I was her caregiver.

After the loss of my mother, I moved in with my maternal grandmother and uncle for my final year of high school.  I then moved to Ottawa to attend university.  My uncle would lose his battle with cancer while I was away.  My grandmother, already a widow, had now lost both of her children and turned to me for support.

Many years have passed, and my responsibilities for my grandmother have greatly increased.  As her primary caregiver, I have experienced many of the same challenges that other family caregivers go through when caring for an aging loved one.  It can be emotionally and physically exhausting.

When Denielle suggested opening Home Instead Senior Care, I felt like it was the next logical step for us.  Together we could combine our life experiences and improve the lives of others.
