A word from Danielle:

What an honour it is to be the recipient of the Caregiver of the Year Award for Canada.  Who would have thought I’d be here today?  I am grateful for the recognition I have received for my work.

Caregiving is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  I truly believe it to be a calling.  I get to ease those in distress, bring a smile to their face, and let them see that there is someone who cares.

Many people don’t realize how important it is to have care and support in order to decrease accidents, depression and loneliness. It is so important for seniors to have someone to rely on and bond with and I am so thankful to be that person for so many.

I have learned so much from the hundreds of clients I have supported over the last 9 years with Home Instead.  We laugh together, dance together, take car rides and listen to music.  I have learnt the importance of listening, of just being there, and treating others with dignity and respect.  Not all is serious though, I have heard some pretty wild stories and off-colour jokes!  I cherish every moment we spend together and appreciate every experience!

FAQs

Senior Care CAREGiving Q&A

A: I make scheduled visits to seniors’ homes to provide companionship and help them with everyday tasks. Sometimes that means going to their family home, and other times it means serving them in a care facility.
A: Every day is different, and I love that variety! One day I might be cooking lunch and playing cards with a client, and the next day I may be helping a different client. No matter what tasks I’m performing, I leave each shift with a deep sense of accomplishment.
A: That’s easy! Home Instead doesn’t require previous caregiving experience. Their training program is so thorough that I learned everything I needed to know to provide confident care right away. All I had to bring to my interview was a compassionate heart.
