Isolated seniors might 'have a bowl of cereal or they won’t eat at all'

You can help brighten someone’s holiday season through the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program.

The campaign, by Home Instead, lets you buy a gift online for a senior in need in Durham. To participate, visit BeASantatoaSenior.com and enter your postal code to buy gifts online from individual Amazon Wish Lists created for each senior.

From there, the gifted items will be delivered to seniors in three Durham Long Term Care Facilities – one in Bowmanville, and two in Oshawa.

If you prefer, you can also select an ornament containing a senior’s gift request by visiting a local gift tree. Purchase your gift and return it to the delivery box located at the tree. Participating Home Instead offices will collect and distribute the gifts to seniors in need.

This year’s program will also support the Cornerstone Community Association, a non-profit with a mission to help people moving from homelessness to independent living.

With the community’s generosity, Home Instead’s program will provide winter outerwear and warm blankets to the people that Cornerstone helps.
