Senior enjoying an spring picnicHave you noticed something different in the air? It may have snuck up without you knowing it, but luckily, it is here. Yes, you are correct! That is the sun shining brighter and making everything around you greener and warmer. It is time to embrace the beautiful weather. Why not share a gorgeous spring afternoon with your dad or mom and go for a picnic? Even a walk around the block can make them smile.

Winter brings many things special such as Christmas and warm fires; but also grey days, and frigid temperatures. It is much harder to get out in the cold, especially for ailing seniors. Staying indoors for months can cause depression and loneliness.  But spring is the time to step out with them and help them stay active. If you do not have the time to take dad or mom on an outing, a Home Instead Senior Care in-home helper may be just the answer. We can take them to their appointments, luncheons with friends, or out for that afternoon stroll around the block.

Involve Your Elders in these Fun Spring Activities with You

Enjoy the fresh air and shining sun to kick the winter blues to the curb. Take advantage of the weather when you get your senior involved with these exciting activities:

  • Go for a picnic: Remember those times when mom and dad took you out on a picnic, packing up sandwiches, a thermos of lemonade, and a blanket? How about doing the same for them now and bringing back those memories? Something is uniquely relaxing about eating outside, even if you have to fight off an ant or two! Invite old friends and family for an impromptu pitch-in at your neighbourhood park. Grab the lawn chairs and lawn games and embrace the fun while soaking in plenty of vitamin D.
  • Get some exercise: From taking a walk around the block to participating in an outdoor fitness class, people of all ages benefit from exercising. Avoid thinking that your senior is too frail. Start dad off slow with a short 10-minute walk or teach mom how to play the popular new family game - Pickleball. Exercise helps keep the oxygen-rich blood flowing throughout the body, including the brain.
  • Go on a field trip: If you do a bit of research, you can easily find tourist spots to visit. Consider making a day of it by heading out to a favourite museum or your city’s zoo, and then grab some lunch or dinner. Check out special events at community parks. Take your loved one to your child’s soccer game. The point is to get out and enjoy the world beyond the four walls of your parent’s home, together.
