Why families switch to CDHCI
Most families only find out CDHCI exists after they've already been assigned a provider through standard AHS home care - often after a rough experience with inconsistent caregivers or a provider that didn't feel like the right fit. CDHCI exists to fix exactly that problem: it hands the choice back to you.
- One dedicated Care Manager who knows your file - not a rotating call centre
- Consistent, background-checked Care Pros matched to your family's needs
- Care plans that adjust as needs change, without restarting the process
- Local team serving Leduc and area, not a distant regional office
CDHCI vs. Standard AHS Home Care: What Actually Changes
The assessment is identical either way. What changes is who ends up at your door.
| Standard AHS-Assigned Care | CDHCI (Client Directed) | |
| Who picks the provider | AHS assigns based on availability | You determine which approved provider (such as Home Instead) will best meet your personal needs |
| How it's paid | AHS pays the provider directly | Your chosen provider invoices Alberta Blue Cross, without you as the middle man. |
| Consistency | Can change providers/caregivers with little notice | You build an ongoing relationship with a provider you selected |
| Starting point | AHS home care assessment | Same AHS home care assessment |
| Care provided | Only AHS-approved tasks; new caregivers every day; in and out in 20 minutes; showing up when it's convenient for them | Person-centered care; assistance with all aspects of daily living; known caregivers coming at times that work for you |
Nothing about your eligibility or funding changes - CDHCI just puts the choice of who delivers the care in your hands instead of AHS's.
Is CDHCI Right for Your Family?
Consider CDHCI if you:
- Already know a provider you'd trust, or have had a bad experience with an assigned one
- Have a loved one with memory loss who does better with the same familiar caregiver
- Want a say in scheduling, not just whatever slot is available
- Live in Leduc, Spruce Grove, Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Ponoka, or surrounding areas-- all areas that Home Instead serves directly
- Want dedicated time for personal care and connection, not being rushed through task-focused care
You may not need CDHCI if:
- You're satisfied letting AHS coordinate and assign your care team
- You don't have a strong preference about who provides the care
- You're satisfied with caregivers only spending 10–20 minutes providing care.
How to Use CDHCI
- If you have not been approved for home care, call Health Link at 811 to request a home care assessment with AHS.
- It may take some time to book and complete an assessment. If you are in need of care right away and are okay with paying out of pocket for care until you are approved for funding, call Home Instead today to book a complimentary care consultation
- Once an AHS nurse conducts your in-home assessment and approves you for home care (or if you were already approved or receiving care through the AHS assigned provider) inform your AHS Case Manager that you would like to use CDHCI and select your own care provider.
- Your AHS Case Manager will calculate the number of care hours that you have been approved for, have you sign an agreement, and set an activation date.
- You are then able to use your approved hours towards an approved care provider such as Home Instead. Contact Home Instead directly to discuss care planning and scheduling.
- If you were already receiving care, inform your AHS Case Manager of the date you plan to transfer care, and it should be a seamless transition.
- After you begin receiving care, Home Instead will invoice Alberta Blue Cross directly for all of your approved care amounts.
