Nurse-directed care

Additional support, guided by expertise.

When care needs become more complex, having support you can trust makes all the difference. As care needs change, having consistent, well-coordinated support becomes even more important.

Nurse-directed care brings together the oversight of a registered nurse and the day-to-day support of trained Care Pros. This approach helps ensure care is delivered safely, consistently, and in a way that reflects your needs—so you can remain at home with confidence.

What nurse-directed care can include:

  • Medication management – organizing and administering medications, and handling more involved tasks like crushing pills or drawing liquid dosages.
  • Vital signs monitoring – taking, documenting, and reporting vitals.
  • Glucose monitoring – checking blood sugar levels and administering insulin as prescribed to help manage diabetes.
  • Wound care – cleaning and protecting wounds to support healing and reduce the risk of complications.
  • Oxygen therapy – providing oxygen, monitoring saturation levels, and adjusting flow to the prescribed setting.
  • Catheter and incontinence care – managing catheters and other incontinence support with dignity and discretion.

Services are provided in accordance with provincial regulations and under nurse direction. Contact your local office for details about available support.

Care guided by expertise, delivered with compassion.

Every care journey is unique. That’s why nurse-directed care begins with understanding your needs, routines, and what matters most to you.

A registered nurse helps guide your care plan and provides direction to Care Pros, who deliver day-to-day support based on that direction with consistency and respect.

This approach allows for more advanced support at home—while keeping the focus on comfort, dignity, and independence.

Nurse-directed Care FAQs

Nurse-directed care is in-home support guided by a registered nurse. A nurse helps create and oversee your care plan, while trained Care Pros provide day-to-day support based on that guidance.

Nurse-directed care is not the same as clinical nursing care. Regulated health professionals provide medical services, while Care Pros provide non-medical support and may assist with certain health-related tasks under nurse direction and within permitted scope.

This type of care can support individuals with more complex needs, such as managing medications, recovering from surgery, or living with chronic conditions—always within the scope of care and guided by a nurse.

For some individuals, nurse-directed care can provide the level of support needed to remain safely at home. Whether it’s the right fit depends on your needs, and our team can help you explore your options.

Home Instead Care Pros are carefully screened and background-checked. They receive training based on our person-centered care approach, including support for mobility, personal care, and more complex care needs.
