24-hour home care FAQs

For someone who needs continuous assistance, we can arrange Care Pros to provide support throughout the day and night.

Depending on the care plan, that might include personal care, meals, medication reminders, mobility assistance, companionship, overnight support, safety supervision, and reassurance.

Home Instead Halifax focuses on building a dependable, consistent care team that gets to know the client, their routines, and what helps them feel comfortable at home.

Yes. We can provide continuous care through rotating Care Pros or a live-in arrangement for families who prefer greater consistency and fewer caregiver changes.

Some Nova Scotia families may recognize the traditional live-in model by the colloquial expression ‘Newfoundland lady’ or ‘Newfoundland ladies.’ Our arrangement uses Care Pros from our own local Home Instead team. A Care Pro stays in the home, provides support during the day, and has designated rest periods.

We can discuss which model is appropriate for the client’s needs.

Families may consider 24-hour care when an older adult can’t safely remain alone, needs substantial assistance throughout the day and night, is living with advanced dementia or changing care needs, or requires more support after leaving hospital.

Care doesn’t necessarily remain at that level forever. Our Halifax team can adjust the schedule as circumstances change, whether that means reducing support during recovery or adding assistance when needs increase.

Winter weather can make travel and coverage more challenging, which makes planning especially important when someone can’t safely be left without support.

During one severe winter storm, a longtime Home Instead Care Pro stepped up when a client needed someone there and circumstances made coverage particularly difficult. Her willingness to be there meant the client wasn’t left without needed support.

It’s a local example of what dependable around-the-clock care can require when Nova Scotia weather becomes part of the care plan.

Cost depends on the client’s needs and how continuous support is arranged. A rotating 24-hour schedule and a live-in arrangement are different care models, so we’ll discuss the appropriate schedule and customized care plan with your family.
