What is Alzheimer’s and Dementia?

Dementia is “a group of thinking and social symptoms that interferes with daily functioning.” Dementia is not a specific disease, but rather a “group of conditions characterized by impairment of at least two brain functions, such as memory loss and judgment”. There are multiple variations of dementia which include Lewy body dementia, fronto-temporal dementia, vascular dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60% to 80% of dementia cases.

Alzheimer’s disease is a “progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions”. These functions include brain cell connections. The brain cells themselves even begin to degenerate and die, eventually destroying memory and other important mental functions. (Raising awareness for cognitive diseases is one of the reasons ‘Why Home Instead Took a Walk’ for Parkinson’s. Read that article here.)

Primary symptoms of Alzheimer’s/Dementia include forgetfulness, limited social skills, and thinking abilities that are so impaired they interfere with daily function. The increasing limitations of a loved one’s cognitive abilities can be frustrating to those compassionate to be a caregiver. These symptoms can hinder the communication between loved ones and caregivers and family members. For the family caregiver, the diagnoses of Alzheimer’s/Dementia on a loved one is emotionally tragic. Families might feel at a loss for how to best interact with their loved one in this new way. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, there are medications and management strategies that may temporarily find relief and help to improve symptoms. Home Instead believes that education and training in these strategies provides access to such relief, better communications, and better care.

This is why Home Instead San Diego established the Alzheimer’s/Dementia Training class for our Care Pros so that they can be knowledgeable and ready to provide the best Alzheimer's & Dementia care for our beloved clients and their families.
