Advancing how we care for those with memory loss.
While medical research works towards treatments for memory issues like Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, there have also been advances in how we care for those living with memory loss. With guidance from Dr. Lakelyn Hogan-Eichenberger, Home Instead’s on-staff gerontologist, we’ve developed a person-centered approach to memory support, uniquely designed to:
- Care for the whole person.
- Honor your loved one’s life before their cognitive decline.
- Help them continue to enjoy activities and hobbies they love.
- Compassionately respond to cognitive and behavioral symptoms.
- Help enhance safety in the home environment.
- Review and adjust care plans as needs change.
Compassionate care begins with a thoughtful care plan.
Over the years, one thing has been clear: no two people experience memory loss the same way. That’s why we take the time to understand your loved one’s needs, routines, and story—so we can create an in-home memory care plan that truly fits your family.

In-home memory care FAQs
A Care Pro may arrive to find someone unsure what they should be doing or resistant to getting ready for the day. Rather than rushing them, the Care Pro can take time to reconnect and gently establish a familiar routine.
The visit might include breakfast, dressing, personal care, a walk, photographs, favourite music, or preparing a familiar meal. When confusion or frustration occurs, the Care Pro can provide reassurance and redirection.
Home Instead Halifax also works to introduce a small, consistent team whenever possible so clients see familiar faces.
We adjust support as the person’s abilities, routines, behaviours, and safety needs change.
Someone experiencing mild memory loss may initially need companionship, meals, reminders, and help maintaining a routine. More advanced dementia can require additional personal care, mobility assistance, supervision, and support throughout the day.
Our Care Pros have supported local clients whose dementia needs became increasingly complex over time. Familiar routines, patience, and consistent relationships help us adapt without losing sight of the individual behind the diagnosis.
Yes. We work with the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia through community events, education, outreach, and ongoing relationship-building.
Our team participates in Alzheimer Society events and community initiatives, including the Walk for Alzheimer’s, and helps connect families with available education and resources.
The relationship also keeps our team connected with the broader dementia-support community and the changing needs of families across HRM and Lunenburg County.
Yes. We’ve supported local families who needed dependable time away from caring for a loved one living with dementia.
In one case, a consistent Care Pro already understood the client’s personality, routines, and needs. That familiarity allowed family caregivers to step away knowing their loved one was with someone they knew.
Respite visits can include companionship, meals, personal care, familiar activities, mobility assistance, and reassurance while the family caregiver works, attends appointments, or gets some needed rest.
Our Care Pros have supported people living with advanced dementia, including clients whose needs became increasingly complex.
They use patience, familiar routines, reassurance, and a calm approach to build trust and reduce uncertainty. Home Instead Halifax’s broader leadership and care team also bring decades of combined experience in areas including nursing, long-term care, community care, Continuing Care Assistance, caregiving, social services, and care coordination.
Cost depends on the person’s needs and how often support is provided. Someone may begin with a few visits each week and need additional support later as circumstances change.
We create a customized care plan around the individual rather than using one standard dementia-care schedule.
