Be a Santa to a Senior Brings Joy to Older Adults in Halifax

IMG 2352

As the festivities of the holiday season begin, Home Instead® encourages Halifax residents to participate in the Be a Santa to a Senior® program and share the joy by giving a gift to older adults in the community who may not have anyone to celebrate with.

“The holidays can be hard for many older adults, especially those who may not have a companion to share them with,” said Alice McCarron owner of the Halifax Home Instead office. “Through Be a Santa to a Senior, we can help these seniors experience the happiness and togetherness the season can bring.”

This year program coordinators hope to collect 3,500 gifts for 2,500 local older adults. This is the program’s 17th year in the area.

To participate, shoppers can look for Be a Santa to a Senior tree at the Home Instead office and the Berkeley Retirement Residences. Ornaments featuring the name and desired gift of an older adult will be on display, and shoppers can buy the requested gift and return it the location with the ornament attached. Ornaments will be available from November 14th to December 8th and the gifts will be delivered by the Halifax Regional Police in time for the holidays.

Be a Santa to a Senior trees can be found at the following locations:

  • Home Instead, Halifax Professional Centre, 5991 Spring Garden Road, Suite 425
  • The Berkeley Bedford, 2 Convoy Run, Bedford
  • The Berkeley Dartmouth, 35 Eisener Boulevard, Dartmouth
  • The Berkeley Gladstone, 2633 Gladstone Street, Halifax
  • The Berkeley on Pepperell, 6240 Pepperell St, Halifax

“Gifts aside, the true value comes in the connection Be a Santa to a Senior makes between the community and our older neighbors,” said McCarron.

Be a Santa to a Senior brings together the entire community, with support from local businesses, nonprofit organizations, retailers, volunteers, and countless other community members.

Over the past 16 years, Be a Santa to a Senior has provided more than 24,000 gifts to seniors in our community.
