Congratulations, Ruby S, for being our CAREGiver of the Month for Sep 2021!

Ruby is a reliable and compassionate individual inside and out. You’ll recognize that as you read more about her.

Where were you born?

I was born in a small town in the Northern part of the Philippines.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a rural place named La Paz, Laoag City province of Ilocos Norte.

How long have you worked at HISC?

I started working with HISC since March 2021 and am grateful for the opportunity to work with this team.

What’s your favorite part of caregiving?

My favourite part of care giving is when I make my clients happy and contented i.e. when I can make them smile. I know every person has a role in this world we live in, and I consider this to my role in life; to make a difference in the lives of my senior clients.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I am 61 years old, a single mom with two children, 29 and 19 years of age. I am the second eldest of a family of 7 children. I was raised by my grandmother, but she died at the age of 72, while I was in training for my nursing program. So, I was not able to care for her during her old age. Losing her that way had a big impact on me personally and on the direction of my career. I promised myself that after graduating from nursing, I will work with old people and help them as best I can. I was hired to work as a nursing assistant in a senior’s home run by the government in Singapore. After working there for 3 years, I go interested in moving to Canada after learning about the experiences of other friends and family settled there. After living in Canada for 2 years I got my PR and continued my passion of working with seniors through employment with various companies (Caps Nursing Services, Comcare, Paramed, West Coast Homecare etc.). I was glad to get so many opportunities and such wonderful experiences working with the elderly from so many different cultures. Through my work, I was also able to gain skills in languages such as Mandarin, Ukrainian, Malay and Tamil! For me working with seniors is a reward in itself. My grandmother used to tell me “If you work with old people, you are blessed.” After all, we all grow old one day. I hope that when my time comes, I will also be treated with the same love and respect as I treat the senior clients that I look after!

God bless you, Ruby!
