Every year it is a highlight to celebrate the gift of caregiving and especially those for whom this work is a calling.  This year we are pleased to introduce you to the energetic, vibrant Muriel Nuesch.

Muriel is the mother of 2 sons in Saskatoon and the grandmother of Ella & Eric.  She brings to this career her experience as a nurse and the hardworking spirit of someone who farmed in Saskatchewan for many years.  Muriel loves to work with her hands and has a love for the arts.  In the spring she dedicates some of her time to work in a greenhouse and expresses her creative, European flair through painting, ceramics and multiple art forms, including volunteering at the Mendel Art Gallery. We are so glad that Muriel made her way from Switzerland to a farm near Saskatoon years ago and has now found her way to us.  Muriel has worked with Home Instead Senior Care, Saskatoon, since April of 2009 and has served over 4500 hrs with 59 different clients.  Muriel is resourceful, energetic and ready for the challenges of CAREGiving.  She has diligently served clients with complex needs and has done so with grace and determination.  We have great appreciation for Muriel's integrity.  She can be counted upon to say and do exactly what she thinks is best for her clients.

Muriel is persistent with her clients, ensuring they receive the care they need and deserve.  Her client, Susan, was living with Alzheimer's disease and her daughter waned us that t would be difficult to care for her.  Muriel had tried repeatedly to engage her in a relationship but Susan would spend several hours in the lobby of her apartment waiting for the 'cleaning lady' to finish.  Flustered after a few visits, Muriel came into the office where admin staff spent time debriefing her shifts, brainstorming techniques, approaches suggestions and activities regarding Alzheimer's Disease.  Together they discussed the fact that gaining ground with Susan would take a lot of time and patience.  Muriel took the recommendations to heart.  A few days later, she came into the office with a broad grin, "I did it...we are friends!".  We celebrated her success and the improvements in her senior's life.

Each CAREGiver brings their personality and heart to the work of improving a client's quality of like.  Muriel enjoys the simple beauty of what she sees all around her.  Her joy bubbles up and is expressed in a number of ways.  Once she starts serving them, clients and families ask for Muriel to return as much as possible.  She has made wonderful connections with her clients and brought great peace of mind to the families.  Because of her drive as an advocate and her shills as a collaborator, Muriel often assumes a Lead CAREGiver role as part of a team, providing Admin staff with vital information about daily changes in client conditions and ways to support new CAREGivers.

Messy situations do no scare her-she digs in and works hard to bring improvements and solutions.  Muriel excels at helping people who are down.  She encourages them and models for them various ways in which to embrace life, savour each moment and stay active.  Muriel definitely embodies our mission: to enhance the lives of older adults and support family caregivers.
