Is It Time for Home Care? How to Know and What to Do Next

Why Home Care, and Why Now?

How to recognize when it’s time for help — and where families turn for guidance.

“I wish we had started sooner.”

We hear this often from families. Not because they did something wrong, but because they were doing their best to manage on their own.

For many families, the hardest part is not choosing a provider. It is deciding whether to get help at all. You may find yourself wondering if things are “serious enough” yet. You may feel like you should be able to handle it a little longer.

That hesitation is completely normal.

But here’s what we know from experience—and research:
Nearly 90% of adults over age 65 say they want to age in place (AARP, 2024). In other words, they want to remain in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by familiar routines and the people and things they love.

Home care makes that possible. And with the right support, at the right time, it doesn’t take away independence—it protects it.

Why waiting can be the harder choice

Many families wait for a fall, hospitalization, or crisis to act. But waiting often leads to more stress, fewer options, rushed decisions, and increased costs when an emergency hits.

Even if you’re not quite ready to begin care, starting the conversation today can make all the difference.

Starting early can also help address small challenges before they grow, making it easier to manage time, expenses, and emotional energy down the road.

What makes home care worth it?

Home care offers flexibility, personalized support, and the comfort of staying at home.

At Home Instead, care comes from someone you can trust. Our professional caregivers, known as Care Pros, are carefully selected for both skill and compassion. They provide consistent support with heart.

A Care Pro can help with daily needs like personal care, meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation, companionship, and specialized support for Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other chronic conditions.

But beyond the tasks, they bring companionship. Someone your loved one looks forward to seeing. Someone who makes the day feel lighter.

For family caregivers, that support can be life-changing. It creates space to breathe. It allows you to step back without stepping away and return to being a daughter, son, or spouse, not only a caregiver.

When the right support is in place, balance becomes possible. Burnout does not have to be inevitable.

What about the cost?

Home care is typically billed by the hour, so you only pay for the support you need. Many families start small, with just a few visits a week. We can also help you explore options that may reduce or offset the cost, including:

● Family- funded or private pay
● Long-term care insurance
● Veterans benefits (VA Aid & Attendance)

Some families use long term care insurance or Veterans benefits to help cover costs. If you want to learn more about VA resources, listen to:

When you compare it to the cost of assisted living or burnout-related emergencies, in-home care is the simpler, often more affordable and smarter choice.
